The Philosophy of Chiltern Primary School

Curriculum

Please note:  Chiltern Primary School is actively implementing the new Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) and this website will shortly reflect thus.

The School offers programs covering the eight Key Learning Areas which are English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Studies of Society and the Environment, Languages Other Than English (LOTE) , Arts, Health and Physical Education. As well many support and enrichment programs also operate.
English:
Our English program is based on Early Years Literacy strategies and covers the areas of Reading, Writing and Speaking & listening.
Early Years literacy focuses on strategies for students in Years Prep – Year 4. It incorporates strategies for classroom programs, parent participation, PD for staff and early intervention for students needing extra assistance. To support the Early Years program we are currently implementing Middle Years strategies that follow a current DET initiative for Years 5 and 6.
We have developed a school Literacy Plan that sets out strategies to improve the overall performance of all students in all areas of English.

Mathematics:
The priority of our School Charter is the development and implementation of a P-6 Mathematics program based on the Early Years Numeracy program and the Middle Years Numeracy strategies. We have a Numeracy Plan that identifies the expectations and outcomes targeted for Mathematics, highlighting the strategies, the timeline, and the resources needed to achieve this goal.

LOTE (Languages Other Than English):
Our school offers a program in French for all students. Classroom teachers deliver this program with the assistance of a French intern where possible during the year.

Health & Physical Education:
We provide a comprehensive Health and PE program, with all students participating in many PE and sporting activities. Students are given the opportunity to participate in many special programs such as swimming, cross-country skiing, sailing, inter-school sports and camps as part of this curriculum area.

Arts:
All students are given the opportunity to participate in music, creative art and drama programs at Chiltern Primary School. Participation in school concerts, assemblies, community functions and the District Arts Festival enable students to present their creative abilities to the outside community.

Science:
The science curriculum is covered in units of work throughout the year in all classes. Children are encouraged to participate in special science programs such as the Energy Challenge.

SOSE (Studies of Society and Environment):
Units of work taken throughout the year in an integrated approach to learning cover this curriculum area.

Technology:
This curriculum area is also covered through an integrated approach in many units of work. Students are given every opportunity to explore their learning in this area of the curriculum.
