Enrolments

Student Enrolments:
Enrolments are taken at any time of the year. Prep enrolments are taken in September/October prior to the Prep orientation program commencing. Children must be 5 years of age before April 3oth in the first year of school. Parents are reminded that 2 documents need to be sighted by the Principal for enrolment, a Birth Certificate and an Immunisation Status Certificate. An enrolment form must be completed giving all necessary details and information. If a child is transferring from another school a transfer form is requested.

Student Records:
Parents must complete an enrolment form when a student enrols. At the beginning of each year these forms must be updated to ensure that the information is current. It is most important that emergency contact information and medical details are up to date. Parents are requested that should this information change at any time during the year the school must be informed of any changes. The school must also be made aware of any custody or court orders relating to any student

Students with D and I:
Students who are identified with special needs are most welcome at Chiltern Primary School. Support programs following D & I guidelines will be maintained to provide an appropriate learning environment for such students.

Attendance:
Parents are asked to encourage regular attendance and punctuality. This is essential for progress and continuity. However, the child's health is of paramount importance and a sick child should be kept at home. If a child is sick you must phone or send a note to explain the reason for the absence.

Communication
Newsletter:
The school newsletter is sent home each Thursday with the eldest child in the family. Information on current activities for the school community are featured.

Notices:
These will sent home as required by the classroom teachers or school council. There is also a Parent Notice board outside the front door and in the foyer where current information is displayed for student and parent attention. Parents are encouraged to contact the school office if they are uncertain about any school activity.

Assembly:
A school assembly occurs every Wednesday morning in the Bristol building. Senior students conduct this assembly and parents are welcome to attend to witness musical items, awards, reports and current information being presented.

Parent Information evenings:
These are generally held at the beginning of each school year. They may also be held throughout the year on areas of interest to parents or on issues relevant to the curriculum or the implementation of new programs or initiatives.

Concerns:
Parents are invited to visit the school at any time to discuss their child's progress although we do request that an appointment is made beforehand. If parents have any concerns or questions about any issues relating to the school and its programs, please contact the school directly. We believe that it is preferable to raise issues of concern early so that appropriate action can be taken to benefit all concerned. Early discussion of concerns can assist in solving potential problems as soon as possible.

Parent Teacher Interviews:
Formal reporting will occur according to the following time table:

Leaving the Grounds:
If parents wish their child to leave school early for any reason, such as medical or dental appointments, a note should be sent to the classroom teacher and you should collect your child from his or her classroom teacher.

Education Allowance/Fees

Each year the school receives a government grant to assist with the purchase of the necessary books and requisites for pupils to participate in school programs.
The School Council has set a Schools Materials Account of $100 per child to provide children with classroom and curriculum materials above the level provided by the government. A $25 levy for each family has been also set for 2006 to help maintain the school gardens.  A range of payment options are negotiable.

Education Maintenance Allowance:
The Government provides an Education Allowance for all children whose parents are holders of Commonwealth Health Cards/Centrelink Card. We will be asking parents with Health Cards to fill in the claim form in February and July as the allowance is paid twice yearly.

Money:
All money and cheques should be placed in an envelope with the child's name and the teacher's name written on it, and handed to the Office. All cheques must be made payable to Chiltern Primary School.

Travel to and From School

Bus Policy:
The bus service is provided for the use of children who live more than 4.8 kms from the school. At the discretion of the bus coordinator other town children may catch the bus if space permits. Applications for bus travellers will be called for at the end of the year. Bus travellers are to abide by the rules as set down in the Bus policy. Every endeavour shall be made to advise parents if the bus, for any reason, is unable to run.

School Crossing:
We endeavour to ensure the safety of all students travelling by foot, bicycle or car to school and encourage all parents and students to correctly use the school crossing before and after school hours.

During the year a photographer is appointed to come to the school to take class, group and family photographs. There is no obligation for you to purchase the photographs.

Book Club
A book club is run at the school and children are encouraged to buy books as they become available. Order forms and brochures from Ashton Scholastic are sent home on a regular basis.

Medication at school

Some children at the school may need medication. Children should not be allowed to carry and administer their own medication except by special arrangement with the Principal. To assist teachers the medicine should be supplied in a container clearly marked with the child's name, the name of the medicine, the dose and the time to be administered.
Cough Lollies -  Cough lollies are classed as a medication. Children require a permission note to take these during school time.
Children with Asthma must have an Asthma Management Program completed and lodged with the school. The school has an Asthma Management procedure that must be followed by staff in all cases.

Infectious Diseases:
There are set periods of exclusion for your child if he/she has any of the following diseases. Details can be obtained from either the school or your doctor.

Children who are not fully immunised may be excluded from school if some of these infectious illnesses are present in the school.

Head Lice:
In an effort to control this ever present problem in a school setting we encourage all parents to consent to their child/children participating in regular head lice inspections by a registered nurse. Children found to be infected are to be excluded until treatment has been undertaken.
Parents are requested to notify the school as soon as they are aware their child is infected.

Ambulance:
In the event of a serious accident or injury to any student at school, parents should be aware that an ambulance would be called if deemed necessary. Parents are encouraged to be financial members of the Ambulance Fund.

School Medical Visits:
During the year the School Medical Service conducts medical examinations of children in Preps, permission being required. The Medical Service also conducts hearing and sight tests for Prep and some other children. Where it is considered necessary, teachers and parents may request medical examinations in other years.
In special cases, and again with parental permission, advice and assistance is available on children's hearing, speech, emotional, social or behavioural problems.

Sunsmart:
Chiltern Primary School is a Sunsmart school and students must wear broad-brimmed hats in Terms 1 and 4. Shade structures and veranda areas are provided for the use of students during the hot summer months. During Terms 1 and 4 outside class activities will be timetabled to occur before 11am and after 3.00pm.

Student Support Services:
The school has access to a range of student support services which we access to meet specific needs of students. Examples of these services are a Speech Pathologist, Educational Psychologist, Social Worker or Visiting Teacher for the Hearing Impaired. We are able to use both Education Department or private services. Please contact the Principal or Student Welfare Coordinator, Mrs Payne, if you feel your child is in need of these services.

Family Emergency Phone Numbers:
These are recorded on student admission forms; however, they need to be updated if any change occurs. It is important for the school to be able to trace parents or another contact in an emergency.
