Welcome Our Vision School Context Contact

Welcome to Chiltern Primary School

Our school has excellent facilities with modern and attractive buildings, carpet throughout the school, air-conditioning and a well-stocked library. Our extensive computer resources (computers in all rooms in addition to a set of 10 notebooks) provide our students with the latest learning technologies, which will improve their learning opportunities throughout the curriculum.  Four interactive whiteboards are installed in the classrooms.

We care about our students. We have committed teachers who put the needs of the students first. We provide support to students experiencing difficulties with learning through our support programs. We have a strong welfare program with a strong emphasis on primary intervention.

This website has been produced to provide you with an insight into Chiltern Primary School. It will also attempt to answer some questions you may have about the school's operation. At times there will be questions of a personal nature that can only be answered in a face to face meeting between you and the teacher. One of the features of the school is the way it encourages active continuous communication between children, teachers and parents.

Our Vision

Our vision:   To provide innovative and enriching programs that challenge students to explore and achieve their full potential in a supportive and caring environment.  We value and embrace family and community involvement.

School Context

Chiltern Primary School is a rural school of 90 students in a town of 1300 located approximately 30 km south of Wodonga.  The shire estimates community growth of 5.2 % p.a. in coming years.   About 1/3 of families are entitled to receive the Educational Maintenance Allowance.  For some families, parental work commitments make school participation a low priority.
Chiltern Primary School has a Principal, 4.6 classroom teachers, 3 specialist part-time teachers and 3 classroom support staff who are engaged to support and extend students with wide ranging learning opportunities.  In the near future, significant teaching experience and expertise will be lost.  The school was, in 2006, accredited with a Performance & Development Culture.

The school is looking to build on home-school-community partnerships relationships.  A Primary Welfare Officer is employed to assist with developing partnerships between all stakeholders.     Parent satisfaction surveys consistently rank our school well above state levels.

Our school wishes to strengthen our community of learners to maximise the participation of all stakeholders – students, families and the wider community and promote our school as a centre of excellence and opportunity.

Chiltern Primary School enjoys high standards of literacy and numeracy based on state-wide benchmarks.  At Chiltern Primary School, the dedicated staff is committed to providing students with a broad and practical learning experience incorporating:

1. A strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy

2.  Thinking skills embedded from Prep –

3.  Specialist art, music and library programs

4.  Active physical education and participation in interschool sports

5.  A wide range of small group extension and support programs

6.  Provision of LOTE (French)

7.  Numerous opportunities for student leadership, voice and responsibility

8.  A range of primary interventions that ensure student wellbeing, health and safety inc. a range of Go For Your Life initiatives

Chiltern Primary School is an active member of the Murray Valley Innovations and Excellence Cluster of schools that includes the Yarrawonga and Rutherglen areas.   Some staff are active in a whole of cluster Boys Education Working Party and others in Transition and Writing focus groups.

Our school aims to continue to develop innovative and enriching programs based on VELS with high expectations utilising a range of assessment strategies, new technologies, authentic experiences and parent & community engagement that build on the strong foundations of literacy and numeracy.  We desire to explore the benefits of a formalised mentoring program, particularly to improve the engagement of boys.

Four interactive whiteboards are installed in the school. Modern technologies are embraced and staff take advantage of our wireless computer network and notebook program.  Every opportunity to access new learnings and opportunities for the implementation of learning technologies is taken.  The new 4 meg optic fibre link will enhance our internet speed enabling the further development of multimedia opportunities.

We aim to continue to implement and explore the potential of emerging technologies across P – 6 as tools for student and community engagement and improved learning that meet the needs of students in the 21st century.

The main school buildings are 21 years old and will need maintenance in the next four years.  The school has excellent facilities with attractive buildings and a range of spacious outdoor facilities with modern playground equipment and shade structures.  We are keen to develop an outdoor learning space and consider how best we can build up sustainable environment options.   In 2008 the construction of a covered outdoor learning area will be the first significant step towards this.  Overall, the classrooms are well resourced and we have a modern library with an extensive collection.

The development of a new master plan that ensures an environment that addresses Chiltern Primary Schools’ maintenance, potential expansion, indoor & outdoor learning spaces, surrounding environment and physical needs is essential and is a high priority for the school.
