Principal's Message

 Dear Parents and Carers,

Our school provides a safe, happy and stimulating learning environment where every child achieves their best. We foster the development of globally aware and community-minded students that have the skills and attitudes necessary to thrive in the 21st century.

Chiltern Primary School has high expectations of all our students and expects excellent social and learning behaviours. Our school is committed to providing a child-safe environment where children and young people are safe and feel safe and their voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives. Particular attention will be paid to the cultural safety of Aboriginal children and children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, as well as the safety of children with a disability.

Our vibrant, dedicated and highly competent staff create wonderful classroom learning environments with a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy. We focus on differentiating the curriculum to suit the needs of each and every learner. We engage students in their studies with a structured timetable of learning and promote reward and recognition for self-improvement and positive work habits. Teachers reward students at each assembly with certificates of achievement to celebrate positive learning success.

The breadth of education is also important to us. In educating the whole child, we place equal importance on developing both the academic and social/emotional capacities of students. This equips them with the skills needed to lead successful lives and develop healthy relationships. Specialist programs include dynamic Music education, creative Arts, Chinese and Physical Education, and Science and Digital Technology programs to stimulate and engage our students and complement the core areas of Literacy and Numeracy.

Keeping abreast of technology is very important, and at our school, we have a diverse range of technology available to students, including interactive whiteboards, tablets, desktop computers, and iPads. We focus on the fundamentals of education and use technology to enhance the learning experience.

I welcome every child to our school and welcome each family. I do not underestimate the power of “parents in partnership” in education and believe as a team; we will make a positive impact on the lives of all the children enrolled. We look forward to working with you and your family in our welcoming community, where the staff are committed to providing the best possible environment for your child to flourish.

About our school

Chiltern Primary School is a small, rural school located in a town of approximately 1300 people. Chiltern is located approximately 30 km south of Wodonga. The size of our school enables our staff to know each child both as a person and a learner. Our small class sizes and unique facilities enables us to offer an all-encompassing education with the capacity to meet the needs of each child, yet is large enough to ensure children have the opportunity to engage in a diverse range of friendship groupings.

We are extremely proud of the dedicated and compassionate nature of our staff and our school motto of, “School, Family and Community Achieving Together,” highlights our commitment to the students and the Chiltern community. We take great pride in nurturing our students to feel safe and secure in the school environment, and through a meticulously planned curriculum, we challenge them to be the best they can be, both academically and personally. We provide students with a wide range of opportunities to engage in all aspects of school life, with our wide range of academic, sporting and creative activities on offer throughout the year.
The school works closely to build on home-school-community partnerships. The Principal undertakes the Welfare role to assist with developing partnerships between all stakeholders. Parent satisfaction surveys consistently rank our school well above state levels. Our school wishes to strengthen our community of learners to maximise the participation of all stakeholders – students, families and the wider community and promote our school as a centre of excellence, opportunity and inclusion.

Chiltern Primary School enjoys high standards of Literacy and Numeracy based on state-wide benchmarks. At Chiltern Primary School, our dedicated staff is committed to providing students with a broad and practical learning experience incorporating:

1. A strong emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy
2. Thinking skills embedded from Foundation through to Year 6
3. Specialist Art, Music, Chinese, and Library programs
4. Sporting Schools program, physical education and participation in inter-school sports
5. A wide range of small group extension and support programs
6. Provision of LOTE (Chinese)
7. Numerous opportunities for student leadership, voice and agency

Community engagement that builds on the strong foundations of Literacy and Numeracy are a priority for our school. We have formed strong partnerships with the Chiltern Red Cross and the Chiltern CFA. We are also partners with the Chiltern Men’s Shed which involves a mentoring project between the members of the shed and our Year 6 students.

Modern technologies are embraced, and staff take advantage of our wireless computer network, iPads and Notebook program. Every opportunity to access new learnings and opportunities for the implementation of learning technologies is taken.

We aim to continue to implement and explore the potential of emerging technologies across F – 6 as tools for student and community engagement and improved learning that meet the needs of students in the 21st century. Our STEAM hub provides our students with opportunities to expand their knowledge.
